Suffolk County Mother AveMaria Thompson New President-Elect of Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association

We congratulate Mother AveMaria Thompson on her new position as President-Elect of Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association. Amistad was created to foster community, professional development, and growth among attorneys of color in the Long Island area and seeks to continue the tradition of providing opportunities for networking, leadership, and professional growth to attorneys in the practice of law who work and/or live on Long Island. Amistad includes among its members judges, prosecutors, lawyers in private practice and in the public service.

AveMaria Thompson received her Bachelor and Master’s Degrees at Buffalo University. She received her Juris Doctorate at Touro College Jacob D. Fuschberg Law Center. During law school, she was a member of Law Review and the President of the Minority Student Bar Association.

In 2000, Ms. Thompson started her career in public service by serving as an Assistant District Attorney for the Queens County District Attorney’s Office (2000-2003). During her tenure as an Assistant District Attorney in Queens County, Ms. Thompson handled hundreds of cases, including appeals. In 2003, she joined the staff of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Ms. Thompson served as a Prosecutor for ten years in Suffolk County. During her tenure as an Assistant District Attorney in Suffolk County, she was a Senior Assistant District Attorney in the Narcotics Bureau. Ms. Thompson presented more than 100 cases to the Grand Jury during her career at the district attorney’s office. She has also worked as an Adjunct Law Professor at Touro College Jacob D. Fuschberg Law Center.

Through the years, Ms. Thompson has held membership and office in various organizations including: a member of the Board of Directors for the Suffolk County Women’s Bar Association; Parliamentarian, Legislative Chair, Community Service Chair and Bylaws Chair for Jack and Jill of America Suffolk County Chapter; Services to Youth Co-Chair, member of the Nominating Committee and Scholarship Committee for the Links, Inc. Long Island Chapter; Executive Board Member for the National Bar Association Government Lawyers Division; Constitutional Law Day Chair for the Amistad Long Island Bar Association; member of the Suffolk County Women in the Courts Committee: and member of Touro Law Dean’s Alumni Advisory Council.

Ms. Thompson is admitted to practice law in New York State and the United States District Court, Eastern and Southern Districts of New York. She is also a member of the National Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association. Ms. Thompson currently practices Criminal, Family, and Immigration law in private practice.
